The Warriors and Cavaliers needed overtime to split them in the opening two games, and they emerged with a win apiece as the series switches to Cleveland for Game 3. A win at the Oracle Arena is huge for the Cavs, particularly considering they lost Kyrie Irving to injury in the first clash which was another devastating blow to a depleted roster.
However, it was a case of no Irving or Kevin Love no problem for LeBron James who is now averaging 35.3 points, 14.3 rebounds and 11.7 assists in three playoff games without two thirds of the ‘Big Three’.
Essentially, the two-time NBA champion has been a beast and has put his team on his back and said let’s go win a championship. The Cavs played with real intensity on defense as a team and gave the ball to LeBron and got out the way for the most part which proved successful.
Yet for all the talk that they could be back in this, there are still big issues for them to face. Can they maintain that level of effort on defense for another game? Can James play 50 minutes on Sunday and then come back as fresh on Tuesday? Will the Warriors shoot as poorly again?
Stephen Curry had a game to forget on Sunday, with Matthew Dellavedova proving to be a real nuisance. However, it was also down to a bad shooting game from the MVP and that doesn’t happen often.
Cleveland should be commended for their efforts so far, but this Warriors team still isn’t playing at its best and their offense has yet to explode.
Back them to come back with a huge effort defensively and a performance from Curry to silence the critics to take back the series lead. The longer this series goes, the more it will suit Golden State and their depth.
